Hello, The Overlap reader!
We’ve published 30 editions. Wow.
To celebrate, I’m going to take a break.
The Overlap #31—our next edition—will publish on September 8th.
I’m having so much fun this summer:
I’ve been training my climbing, before the fall season. In June, I sprained a pulley on my middle finger (yes, this one🖕🏾) from climbing too hard. Now, my finger is back at 90% strength. My goal: get back to full strength before September. I plan to climb around California once the weather cools down this fall.
Because of my finger injury, I’ve reignited an old passion of mine, bboying (breakdancing). I’ve shifted my climbing cadence from 4-5 days a week to 3 days a week. The Southern California bboy scene is back. I can dance during the days I’m resting from climbing. So hey, why not get back into it? Last Friday, I competed at my first jam since 2017. Jesus.
I’ve been reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. It’s been nice connecting and reconnecting. I’m excited to reconnect with friends in New York next week.
Anyway, I’ll be enjoying the rest of my summer. We’ll get back to The Overlap on September 8th.
While this newsletter is about work, know that work is a specific aspect of my life, not my entire life. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do. And I love helping teams, organizations, and people work better. But since COVID, and since moving back to California from New York, I’ve embraced “work as the means of life; leisure the end.”
Work and career no longer take up the majority of my identity. Work takes up a small portion, while the rest of me embraces other passions: climbing, dance, family, and friends. And obviously, I’m privileged to frame work in this way.
What role do you want work and career to play in your life?
I’ll see you on September 8th.
